Abstract

The aim of this collaboration is to build up a sustainable long-term exchange between the partner institutions. Comparing women’s and feminist movements in Europe and Latin America and collectively investigate the transnational points of contact between them will enable the partners not only to empirically document and analyze the current national and transnational development but will also further develop theory that will be relevant both in order to understand contemporary women’s and feminist movements, but also similar transnational and political movements that are currently emerging in the wake of increased polarization, populism and advances of illiberal democracies. By gathering prominent and emerging scholars from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Russia and Sweden, this project seeks to compare contemporary European and Latin American women’s and feminist movements, including the national and transnational mobilization within and between these movements.

The activities and research collaboration will be guided by the following questions:

1- What are the common features and differences between women’s movement organization and agenda in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Hungary, and Poland?

2- Can we assert that we are in the presence of a global women´s and feminist mobilization against a new

(global) form of neoliberal attack on women’s rights?

3- What are the common features and differences between the political and social actors of the “ideology of gender” discourse and the actors of the “integral Catholicism” discourse?

4- What are the demands that are articulating at national and transnational levels the chain of equivalences between women’s movements and linking those movements with other social struggles?

5- Are there any points of contact, articulation or criticism between approaches to illiberal democracies and polypore states and Latin American perspectives on populism, radical democracy, democratization and neoliberal democracies?

6- How can we theorize the current rise of a “feminist people” (Di Marco) or “women as people”
